Connections

Wednesday, October 14th, 2009

The Beat Inititaive are very excited about our involvement with the Connections programme of which Fly Butterfly! is just the beginning…

Fly Butterfly! is funded by Legacy Trust UK, an independent charity set up to help build a lasting cultural and sporting legacy from the 2012 Olympic Games, and is part of the Connections programme which is managed by the Arts Council of Northern Ireland.

Legacy Trust UK is an independent charity whose mission is to support a wide range of innovative cultural and sporting activities which celebrate the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games and which will leave a lasting legacy in communities throughout the United Kingdom. The Trust is funded by a £40 million endowment from the Big Lottery Fund (£29m), Department for Culture Media and Sport (£6m) and Arts Council England (£5m).

Northern Ireland Legacy Trust UK Programme Co-ordinator, Marian Clark de Monreal said,

“Fly Butterfly is the Beat Initiative’s first main event in the Northern Ireland Connections programme. These activities have been funded to help build a cultural and sporting legacy from the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games and it is important to realise the amount of training and skills development which precedes this event.

The Beat Initiative have recruited more than 500 new participants from the arts, sports and community sectors and, in the training programme for excellence, circus skills with disabled adults and aerial dance techniques are just a few of the activities which have been taught and the evidence of which, we will see at the exciting Fly Butterfly performance during Belfast City Hall’s re-opening celebration.”
