Join Belfast’s Lord Mayor to ‘Raise the Dragon’ – this Friday

Wednesday, February 24th, 2010

The Chinese Welfare Association, Beat and Trans would be delighted if you could join with us and our Lord Mayor to Raise the Dragon in the first preparations for this year’s Belfast City Carnival.

The launch event, as the Chinese New Year Celebrations end, marks the start of the CWA’s participation in this year’s carnival programme: and it’s a BIG participation. The giant Chinese Dragon will require at least 90 young people to bring it to life on the street. This will be a wonderful opportunity to welcome community groups from across Belfast to join in. This first carnival event of 2010 is a demonstration of how the summer parade brings multi-cultural celebration to the heart of our city.

This is the 16th year that Beat has created carnival in Belfast and as usual, we will be offering carnival workshops and training to community groups between Easter and the June event. Pursuing our mission to engage communities in celebration for all through carnival arts, Beat will work with Trans, the Chinese Welfare Association and a multitude of arts and community groups to produce another wonderful spectacle.

Beat on the Radio!

Wednesday, October 7th, 2009

The Beat Initiative have had the honour of being featured not just once but TWICE on BBC Radio Ulster’s Arts Extra show this week!!

Click here to listen to a great interview from Monday’s Arts Extra show with Damian Mills, one of The Beat Initiative’s drumming facilitators extraordinaire and four of the young drummers from Wandsworth in east Belfast who are in Bologna this week to take part in a performance to mark the end of the two year BelBoBru Project.

And click here to listen to yet another great interview, this time with Kate Lawrence who has been leading workshops with a group of dancers, actors, circus artists and gymnasts in Belfast over the past two months to develop new skills in vertical dance and produce the choreography to be performed on the front of City Hall on Saturday 17th October to mark its re-opening. The butterfly theme is highly appropriate to choreographing vertical dance, as it allows the dancers to discover movement that ‘flies’ through the air. And when you’ve finished listening to the interview, click here to watch a video of Kate in action.
